Cemetery Remediation – Apex Iqaluit, Nunavut
The Apex Cemetery in Iqaluit, Nunavut, is a place of deep cultural and historical significance, serving as a sacred site that honors the memory of the community’s ancestors. Recognizing the importance of preserving this cherished location, the City of Iqaluit initiated a comprehensive remediation project to address long-standing drainage issues and ensure the cemetery’s long-term integrity. This vital initiative focused on raising and regrading the cemetery, improving drainage systems, and carefully preserving the site’s architectural and burial markers, all while respecting the cultural and emotional significance of the space.
Tower Arctic Ltd. was entrusted with the execution of this sensitive and impactful project, delivering a range of critical activities to achieve the City’s objectives. The first step involved raising and regrading the cemetery to address water accumulation issues. Tower Arctic added granular material to elevate the site, ensuring positive drainage across the entire area. The cemetery was meticulously graded to direct water toward a newly constructed ditch system, effectively preventing water from pooling around burial sites and safeguarding the cemetery’s structural integrity.
A key component of the project was the installation of a new open-channel ditch system along the cemetery’s perimeter. This system was designed to enhance water flow and improve drainage efficiency, with existing culverts reset to optimize functionality. The new ditch system plays a crucial role in mitigating future drainage challenges, ensuring the cemetery remains protected from the effects of heavy rainfall and snowmelt.
Throughout the project, Tower Arctic placed a strong emphasis on preserving the cemetery’s historical and cultural integrity. All architectural and burial markers, including crosses and headstones, were carefully removed and stored during construction. Once the grading and drainage work were completed, these markers, along with landscaping features, were meticulously reinstalled to their original positions. This thoughtful approach ensured that the cemetery’s sacred character and historical significance were maintained, honoring the community’s connection to the site.
Groundwater management was another critical aspect of the project. Tower Arctic developed and implemented a comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan to address potential groundwater contamination from existing burials. All groundwater encountered during construction was managed in strict compliance with environmental regulations, minimizing the impact on the surrounding ecosystem and demonstrating Tower Arctic’s commitment to sustainable and responsible construction practices.
The successful completion of the Apex Cemetery Remediation project represents a significant milestone for the City of Iqaluit and its residents. By addressing long-standing drainage issues and preserving the cultural and historical integrity of this sacred site, the project ensures that the cemetery will remain a place of reverence and respect for generations to come. This initiative underscores Tower Arctic’s dedication to delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions that balance technical excellence with cultural sensitivity and environmental stewardship.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all partners and team members who contributed to the success of this project.
